The holiday festivities are over and the new year is well underway, which means by now you should have set your intention and your goal for the year ahead and a have a plan on how you will achieve them. (or at the very least started this process) Now is the optimum time to review the goals you’ve set to ensure they are right and to use those goals to determine the journey, not the destination. Let me explain.
It’s all well and good to set goals, but what are you doing to make sure you go out and get them? Do you have broken down tasks/steps to make sure you achieve your goals? Do you visualise them and continually remind yourself of them? You want to soak in every aspect of your goal as if it were real in front of you right now. This will help align your focus, your body and your attention on what it is you’re working towards, and make it both possible and real to you. But let’s dive a little deeper into this process.
At the beginning of the year, most people set a goal around some sort of annual performance, or when there’s major thing or event that’s going to happen. And sometimes, somewhere along the way, the goals or the projects we set out to achieve we end up grinding to a screaming halt and later, upon reflection, we realise that weeks or months have gone by and we haven’t achieved what we wanted or gotten the results we desired.
So, how can you give yourself the best chance of successfully achieving your goals and your dreams? One way that you can do this is to create a “Well- Formed Outcome” that motivates you to move forward. You need to paint a clear picture of your dreams, and to create a strong representation of it, that way you can make a big difference that can lead you faster towards success.
Follow these 3 simple steps to set the right goals for the extraordinary life you want:
1. Make a plan
You need to balance things and think first before you set up your goals. Make sure that this goal will not bring you a sucky life, and my sucky I mean focusing so much on the outcome that we forget to spend time on the things that matter, like your loved ones, your family, and your friends. Remember, life will be awesome if you set your goals correctly. Most of our GOALS are about the destination and don’t really consider the journey. I suggest trying switching it around. Focus on the small exciting projects that bring you joy, that fulfill your purpose and that give you a sense of achievement so that you remain motivated. This way the journey to the finish line is filled with accomplishment and success. Say for example you are setting performance targets for your business for the year ahead, focus on what you can achieve each quarter when it comes to yours and or your staff’s personal and professional development and what the smaller more achievable targets are along the way that ultimately means you will achieve your overall goal for the year.
2. Goal = Journey
Once you’ve decided to switch your process around then you should think about setting direction first. This will make your journey easier towards your goal if you figure out the things that would create a fun, meaningful, and compelling journey. Ask the following questions:
- How do I want to Spend My Time?
- What activities make me jump off my bed every morning?
- What are things that I want to learn?
- Who are the people that inspire me and I want to hang out with, that can be a good influence? Who are the creative, ambitious, motivated people who can expose me to new ways of thinking and challenge me?
3. If the goal doesn’t work, change it
We adopt goals for one reason and one reason only, to change our lives. Rather than adopting a goal you hope will change your life once you reach it, do it the other way around. Choose a journey that you think will give you awesome experiences and opportunities. The activities, personal growth, and friends. The goal you have set out to achieve will be your compass throughout your journey. If you think that it’s not the right direction you can still change it. In fact, I encourage you to. Keep your eyes open and awareness sharp, for there are opportunities and clues everywhere that will keep you in check. Because it’s your life, your journey and it’s up to you to create it so that it’s right, FOR YOU. It’s not about who or where you’re destined to be, it’s about the life you live along the way.
Don’t settle for less than an extraordinary life, because you deserve just that!
From my experiences thus far, and from following the above principles, I have met some of the most amazing people and had some of the most amazing experiences (personally and professionally) over the past twenty-five plus years in my working career. All of these steps have helped me to create and develop strong, powerful, motivating, and compelling goals that I have set out to achieve. And I know they will do the same for you, I’d love for you to try them.
