Why is it important to detoxify your life of negative people?

We’ve all experienced toxic people at one time or another, I know I certainly have. And just quietly, I may have even been THAT person myself at some point in my life. Negative people are always complaining and dumping their problems on you but don’t do anything to change their situation. They are the people who criticise your ideas, your goals, and dreams, or the decisions you make. Sounding like someone you know? It’s time to say, ‘enough is enough’ and take back your control! Don’t let negative & toxic people rent space inside your head or in your life, it’s time to detoxify your life! Raise the rent and kick them out.

Who we mix with impacts us, choose who you want to be around and what energy you want in your life.  Respect yourself enough to walk away or to detoxify from anything that no longer serves your purpose, grows you and most importantly, makes you happy. The fact of the matter is, when you release or detoxify these negative people, you create the space for the positive ones to enter. The ones who will encourage, support and help you grow as a person.

Renowned businessman Jim Rohn once said, “You’re the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.”

Even if we are business owners, employees, mums or dads, we are human, and we all need our families, our community, our networks and our tribes, we need people. But in order for us to continue to personally grow, the people we choose to associate with a need to be able to challenge us to be better, elevate our thinking and encourage us to achieve more.

I encourage you to do an audit, write down the five people with whom you spend most of your time. Assign a numerical value to each person from 1 to 10, and then calculate your average (with 10 being the most positive influence possible). How does each person affect your average?

1. Decide that you’re worth it (maybe one of the toughest steps for some of us!)

You need to believe you are capable of moving forward to reach your goal and dreams. You are ready to take action and no there is more for you than what you have now.

2. Identify the negative/toxic people

Let’s be honest, if you’ve read this far you already know who they are.

3. Let them go

Don’t make a big song and dance of it, you don’t owe them a formal explanation or reason. Let them go with integrity and love, acknowledge they have been a part of your life up to this point for a good reason. I’m sure there are lots of awesome memories you’ve shared and created with them.

4. Don’t feel guilty

It’s a tough decision and thing to do, but you know what, you’re totally worth it! This is not a selfish thing to do, you deserve the opportunity to become even more awesome than you already are.

5. Bring the positivity

Be with positive people who encourage your thoughts and support your dreams. Start talking more about what it is you want and who you need to support you to get there and just like magic, those people will start to appear. It sounds crazy but it’s true!
