Over the past five or more years I’ve spent a great deal of time, effort and resources in reinventing myself. I’ve invested in expanding my skills, increasing my knowledge base and racking up my hours of expertise. But it’s been no easy ride. I’ve suffered from self- doubt, pushed myself out of my comfort zone more times than I care to keep track of, put myself back in the classroom on a number of occasions, tested my knowledge and expanded it where necessary, ridden the highs and had to claw my way out of the lows. The key to my success has been all about moving faster than my self- doubt and believing in what I know to be true, both about business and life. It’s what given me the validation and the hours of doing what I do that has now put me in the position as an Expert and I now find myself in.

To be successful in today’s fast-paced business world, it is essential to think about how we position ourselves within our relevant industry. Expert positioning is vital because it is one of the fastest ways to expand your business and to become the authority in your field. Because the truth is told, in business we need to be different to the person down the road, we need to stand out. Most of us put in an enormous amount of effort to be the best at what we do and to build credibility. Once we have established ourselves as the experts in our field, people will start asking us for our advice and our clients will start paying for our expertise. As more and more people recognise our knowledge and worth, we start to validate ourselves and we too begin to see ourselves as experts.

Thinking that you’re already an expert doesn’t stop you from obtaining more knowledge because as you move forward in your business, there’ll be many experts that are equally as competent and awesome at what they do. The key is to remember to be unique and to be consistent with what you do and to make everyone recognise you as the leader, the disrupter or the expert in your field.

Positioning yourself in a unique way and giving being passionate about what you do can help you to build a strong relationship and trust with your customers. So, how you can position yourself as an expert in a unique way? Here are 3 tips to position yourself as an expert:

1.Learn From Your Experiences

Like many of us, I’m sure you’ve sacrificed many things in order to climb the ladder of success. Everything that you’ve gone through, every mistake that you’ve made, every task you’ve completed, every job that you have had or business that you’ve owned and every role you have held has helped you to get to where you are today. Learn from all of it and acknowledge the experience you’ve accumulated because of them.

Take note of what worked and what didn’t work and document your experiences so that you can reflect and have a reference point of what you know.

Acknowledge the resilience and tenacity are what has led you to be where you are now. Adversities in our life are not there to stop us from reaching our goal nor drag us down, they exist to teach us valuable lessons and give us the experiences we need to be the best at what we do.

Like they say, the experience is the best teacher, and the worst experiences teach the best lessons!

2.Have A Voice And Be Consistent

Share your knowledge and experiences, have a voice, be brave and stand out. Let people know you have experience and you are willing to share it. Earn trust and credibility from not only your target market but also from your peers. Get noticed for offering your insights, thoughts, experiences, and ideas. Become an industry authority by speaking out, be a contributor, a disruptor, a trusted advisor by establishing your reputation.

Get an investment from your potential buyers by giving then value before they buy from you. Let’s face it, these days we are all looking for value. Be consistent in your message and communicate regularly, let people know you are always there and that you are reliable. Think about your favourite brands you stick to or the restaurants you always go back to it’s because they are consistent in what they deliver, so it keeps you coming back for more.

3.Practice What You Preach, It Speaks Volumes For Credibility

Just because you’ve had an experience or heard information doesn’t mean that you are the authority on the subject. Put it to practice! People won’t just believe what you say. They will believe what you do.

Everything you do needs to be analysed or to be evaluated before you can make an argument on what your personal position is on your subject of expertise. You need to have completed hours of analysing, testing and implementing and improving to truly prove what you know to be true. You need to put what you know into practice, over and over again.

Walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk. They say that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert. The 10,000-hours concept can be traced back to a 1993 paper written by Anders Ericsson, a Professor at the University of Colorado, called The Role of Deliberate Practice in the Acquisition of Expert Performance. Now, a top sociologist Malcolm Gladwell has added weight to this age-old adage by claiming that you must spend 10,000 hours honing your skills if you want to be a success at anything, and I tend to agree. In his books, he states you need to put in this time over a decade to get to the top of your chosen field. And he backs up his theory by citing sports stars such as Boris Becker, Tiger Woods, and the Williams sisters, who have all become world-beaters because of the obsessive devotion they have shown to their game since childhood.

Have you got your 10,000 hours of practice up to become the expert in your field? Are you practising what you preach?

Remember, nothing kills credibility faster than not practising what you preach.

So there it is, 3 ways to position yourself as an expert! Congratulations on taking the steps needed to stand up and stand out and be recognised for the expert you truly are!
